Picture this: Monday night in West Philadelphia, a little after 7 PM. The Quick and Quality Breakfast & Deli on the 4800 block of Spruce Street is doing what it does every night — feeding the neighborhood. Sandwiches, coffee, regulars, the kind of counter where the staff knows your order before you finish saying it.
A 24-year-old man works behind that counter. Monday night, he earned his pay the way nobody should ever have to.
Police say it started around 6:15 PM, when a man came into the store. Nothing happened that first visit. He left. But about forty minutes later, he came back — and this time he came back angry. He got into a heated argument with the woman working the register, and it kept getting louder, and it kept getting worse.
The 24-year-old stepped in.

That's the whole character of the man in one sentence. He wasn't security. He wasn't armed. He was a deli worker who saw a coworker getting screamed at by an angry stranger and did what decent people do — he got between them and tried to calm it down. Another coworker tried to help talk the man down too.
It didn't work.
Police say the man told the 24-year-old to step outside. And when the young man did — when he walked out onto Spruce Street still trying to end this with words — the man pulled a gun and shot him.
Three times. Abdomen. Thigh. Back.
Then he kept shooting as he ran. Investigators picked up four spent shell casings at the scene. And here's the thing the shooter apparently never thought about: the store's surveillance cameras caught most of it. Police have the video. His face, his clothes, his run — it's all on tape, and detectives are going through it frame by frame.

The 24-year-old was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, listed in serious but stable condition. Serious means three bullets did real damage. Stable means he's fighting, and he's holding. He went to work Monday to make sandwiches. He ended it in a trauma bay because he wouldn't stand there and watch somebody terrorize the woman next to him.

As of this morning, the gunman has not been identified and no arrests have been announced. But he's on video, and Philadelphia is very good at naming people from video once the public gets a look. If you recognize what happened on Spruce Street Monday night — if you were there, if you saw a man run from that block a little after 7 PM — Philadelphia police want the call: 215-686-TIPS (8477). You can stay anonymous.
