Tonight, Philadelphia starts saying goodbye to one of its own.

Officer Shane Seiber, 40, a ten-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, was ambushed on a porch in West Philadelphia in the early hours of Saturday, October 10th, answering a call about a man with a gun. He was shot three times. He never made it home to his wife, his 7-year-old son, and his 3-year-old daughter.

His viewing is tonight — Monday, October 19th, from 6 to 9 PM at Givnish Funeral Home on Academy Road. An hour before it begins, department commanders will march from Archbishop Ryan High School to the funeral home in his honor.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 20th, the city gives him a final sendoff at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. A procession begins at 6 AM. Public viewing runs from 8 to 10:30 AM, with the funeral service at 11:15. At noon, there will be a flyover and honor guard. Burial afterward is private, for family.

And there is one piece of news in all of this worth holding onto. Officer Hector Rodriguez, 33, Seiber’s partner — the officer shot twelve times that same night, a father of five — is on his feet and walking as of Friday. Twelve rounds, and he is up. His recovery is its own kind of miracle, and everybody who has followed this story should know his name too.

Seiber served his country before he ever served this city — United States Air Force, Dover Air Force Base, 2007 to 2015. Then a decade with the Philadelphia Police Department, most of it in the 19th District. Governor Shapiro ordered flags at half-staff in his honor. His killer faces 76 charges and sits in jail without bail.

If you are anywhere near Northeast Philadelphia tonight, or Center City tomorrow morning, and you want to stand along the route or pay your respects in person — now you know where to be. Men like Shane Seiber spend their whole careers showing up for strangers. The least a city can do is show up for him.

Rest easy, Officer. We’ve got it from here.
